How England can qualify for quarter-finals

After last Saturday's agonising defeat to Wales at Twickenham, England's hopes (we are told) are hanging by a thread.

But it's not all doom and gloom. Fifteen is the magic number for England. That is the number of points it will take to guarantee progress from Pool A.

Next up for Stuart Lancaster's men are Australia. A must-win game? Well, yes and no. Beat the Wallabies and England are all but guaranteed their place in the next round. However, a draw would still earn the men in white a stay of execution. Defeat and it's Goodnight Vienna.

Here we look at five possible scenarios that would see Lancaster's men qualify as one of the top two teams in the group.

What are they saying?

"We can't be sitting feeling sorry for ourselves. We've got to roll our sleeves up and get stuck in. I am ready to go and If I am ready to go, I can guarantee they will be."
Stuart Lancaster, England coach

"We've been really insular in terms of our focus. I thought the boys played really well on Wednesday against Fiji. They set a platform and we want to make sure we at least maintain it and take it further."
Drew Mitchell, Australia back
